FAQs

What makes Ohio Birth Center different?

Ohio Birth Center is the first freestanding birth center in Central Ohio and one of only two freestanding birth centers in the State of Ohio. Being rare isn’t the only thing that makes us different, however. Care at Ohio Birth Center is Nurse Midwifery led, evidence-informed, trauma-informed, inclusive, and most importantly, patient-centered. We are specifically designed to support people looking for low-risk birth options and primary care with a midwife. And, it’s provided in a home-like environment.

Is the Birth Center licensed?

We will be fully licensed by the State of Ohio and also accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC). This are ongoing processes that have already begun.

Is Ohio Birth Center only for birth, or can I receive prenatal and postpartum care, too?

Ohio Birth Center is here to care of you from before you get pregnant, through your pregnancy, and beyond. We offer pre-conception consultations, prenatal care , and postpartum care that includes multiple touch points throughout the first six weeks. We also provide well-body care for continued care throughout your lifetime.

How do I know if I’m eligible for care?

Everyone seeking to receive prenatal care and give birth at Ohio Birth Center will have their medical history reviewed and evaluated by our Director of Midwifery. Both the State of Ohio and CABC require us to ensure that our clients and their baby meet specific criteria for a low-intervention birth environment. Your first appointment with our midwives is a one-on-one risk assessment and discussion to review your history and medical records, as well as any questions you have. After this appointment and personalized review, we can determine if birth center care is the best option for you and your baby.

Are there TOLAC (VBAC) options?

At this time, we are unable to offer prenatal and birth care to pregnant people who have had a previous cesarean birth. Our goal is to be able to offer this type of care in the future. If you are in need of a supportive TOLAC/VBAC provider, we’re happy to give recommendations.

Does Ohio Birth Center offer waterbirth?

YES! All three of our birth suites have a large tub and showers available for use during labor and birth. Using water and full submersion tubs can offer pain relief, relaxation, decrease stress for baby, and support for position changes throughout labor and birth. Water birth is a safe option for labor and birth and we are happy to offer this option.

Will I be seen by an OBGYN or a midwife?

Prenatal visits, births, and well-body care are attended by Certified Nurse Midwives with a support staff of RNs and other labor support staff. Our Medical Director is an experienced obstetrician/gynecologist whom our midwives consult with regarding client health concerns.

Clients who have health concerns that contradict low-risk birth center care at any point during their pregnancy will be referred to an OB/GYN in the community for continued care.

Are doulas allowed at the Ohio Birth Center?

YES! We LOVE doulas! We believe doulas are an essential part of pregnancy and birth and we strongly encourage all birth center clients to hire a doula of their choice. Ohio Birth Center does not employ doulas but can give you referrals if wanted. If you are working with a doula, they will be welcomed and respected by all birth center staff.
